Auckland, Nuova Zelanda – 18 marzo 2012 – I sei team della Volvo Ocean Race alle 20.00 ora italiana del 18 marzo 2012 hanno lasciato Auckland per Itajaì, in Brasile. Li aspettano 6700 miglia doppiando l’Horn.
Previsioni di tempo molto duro già per le prime 48 ore, che Ian Walker ha definito “diaboliche”, metteranno alla prova barche ed equipaggi.
E infatti Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing ha già sospeso la navigazione e sta tornando ad Auckland a causa di un problema a una paratia (parte strutturale dello scafo) accusato poco dopo la partenza della quinta tappa.
Abu Dhabi è attualmente quinto nella classifica generale ed era stato costretto al ritiro nella prima tappa a causa di un disalberamento.
